Board of Trustees Member: Reverend Robert Two Bulls
Reverend Robert Two Bulls is an enrolled member of the Oglala Lakota Oyate who resides on, what is left of the Oyate original homeland, the Pine Ridge Reservation in southwestern South Dakota. He was born and raised in the small city of Rapid City South Dakota. His parents left the Reservation like many families and individuals in the early 1950’s for economic reasons. Fortunately they did not have to go far as Rapid City is about a 45 minute drive from the village where Two Bulls’ father was raised. So for the next twenty three years the family would go back every weekend to be with the extended family. This allowed Two Bulls to build a deep, long- lasting relationship with many of his cousins. They would also attend the Wacipis or traditional dancing and ceremonies. One of Two Bulls’ earliest memories is of hearing the drum and singing trail late into the night and feeling the earth reverberate from the deep bass of the drum as both sound and feeling lulled his siblings and him to sleep.
In 1986, Two Bulls left behind his family and moved to Washington DC to be part of a young urban intern program which was then under the Washington National Cathedral. He spent the next year working on and renovating houses in the Shaw Street Neighborhood for low to moderate income families. After his year commitment ended, he decided to live in DC to pursue many interests.
He has been married now for eighteen years to a southern woman of Scot-Irish descent who he met in the Washington DC area. Today they are proud parents of an 11 year old son Grant and eight year old daughter Reed. Currently they live and work in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They moved to Minnesota from Los Angeles where they lived for seven years. Prior to LA they lived a short while in New York City where they attended seminary at the General Theological Seminary.
Two Bulls earned his BS Degree in American History from the University of Maryland at College Park.
Two Bulls’ vocation and ministry is working with the Native American Indigenous Peoples of this land under the auspices of the Episcopal Church. He is an ordained minister. He currently works in both the inner city, urban and reservation setting. He is in charge of an inner city Native American Indigenous congregation called All Saints Mission located near the largest urban Native American housing projects in America, Little Earth.
Two Bulls is also an artist. His medium of choice is acrylics on canvass. His recent focus has been on Icons and Christian religious art. He has designed two icons for two church organizations and a few orders are on the “back burner”. He used to do logo and design work as well as sign writing and calligraphy. He sometimes teaches a class on Art and Spirituality. Other interests are listening to music, reading, and studying. If he were given one choice of something selfish do in life he would probably choose a nice long visit in a great big library while equipped with a full Ipod and a sketchpad.
